Surviving as a Unique Special Machinery Manufacturer
Enomoto Machine has survived in a highly competitive market by specializing in the production of special press machines, which many other companies have stopped making. Only about 10 units are produced per year, but each machine is expensive and has a long lifespan. One challenge is that Enomoto’s presses do not break easily, so there is little demand for replacements. However, this high quality has led to expansion into overseas markets. For example, after a Switzerland competitor closed down, similar machines could no longer be sourced in Switzerland, so customers started buying from Enomoto. Our JAPAN BRAND press technology is used in Switzerland precision watches, car parts from global manufacturers, and even nail clippers that stay sharp.
What is a Screw Press?
A screw press is a machine that uses a screw mechanism to generate force, different from common crank or hydraulic presses. A vise, found in any factory, is a type of screw press, but some screw presses can instantly generate thousands of tons of force. Typically, iron is heated to nearly 1000°C, placed in a mold, and pressed to form gears and other parts. This process is called “hot forging.” It is the modern version of the blacksmith . Hot forging produces parts for cars, motorcycles, ships, gears, bolts, watches, and commemorative medals. Modern screw presses use servo motors, eliminating consumable parts like brakes and clutches, and can generate electricity during deceleration and stopping, making them energy-saving machines.

Pioneering Overseas Markets
President Enomoto focused on expanding sales channels into overseas markets from early on, expanding sales channels. Believing that business deals cannot be done by email alone, the president personally visits places such as trade shows in Brazil, Europe, the US, and Indian car manufacturers. Because the market for this special screw press technology is small, he often negotiates prices directly and secures orders in a single visit. Customers choose Enomoto’s screw presses for its high quality and reliability, though there are other similar machines half the price.
Active approaches and emphasis on face to face communication builds trust and leads to acquiring new customers and expanding business. -
Mission and Philosophy to Preserve Japanese Manufacturing
President Enomoto values the spirit of “monozukuri” (craftsmanship) most. He strongly believes that manufacturing is Japan’s greatest resource, and losing this technology would mean losing Japan itself. His machines have been certified as energy-saving, and they contribute to greater efficiency for society as a whole by helping customers receive subsidies and tax benefits. -
Turning crisis into opportunities
-
Enomoto Machines began hiring international staff in 1995, turning the challenge of domestic hiring into an opportunity for globalization. The president himself decided to “just start doing it” and built overseas connections even when he was young and not fluent in English.
-
Hiring Criteria: “Do You Love Manufacturing?”
When hiring international staff, President Enomoto values a “love for manufacturing.” In interviews, he listens carefully to what and how they have made things, trusting his intuition and observing their reactions.
We also organize internal manufacturing contests, to make opportunity for employees to share the knowledge of technology.
Before hiring international staff, we tell them to make good relationship with current employee, and to play an active role in the company’s overseas expansion. -
Positive Changes Born on Job site
Their contributions have a positive impact to our company.
Currently, international staff at Enomoto Machine mainly manage machining, assembly, and welding, with plans to move into design and development.
Besides that, international staff take the lead in teaching English to Japanese employees once a week at the company, and both teachers and learners count this as work time. As a result, language skills in the company have improved.
They often join events and outings together on holidays. -
Becoming an International Company is our Vision
Our vision is to increase the variety of countries from which they accept staff. We actively welcomes people involved in manufacturing, hoping they will learn Japanese manufacturing technology and spread it to their home countries. Former employees has already act as bridges, helping expand markets overseas. -
Message to Companies Considering Hiring International Employees
I think giving up on recruiting ends the company.
Making effort to actively accept the ones who have passion in manufacturing will lead to the company’s growth, despite the nationality or gender. Sowing the seeds for recruitment is essential.
The company cannot survive without good recruitment.
